Bears end season on the road

From staff reports , The Herald-Star

FARMINGTON, W.Va. - The Oak Glen boys basketball team hung with North Marion for three quarters on Tuesday in a West Virginia Region One, Section One semifinal.

Unfortunately for the Bears, a 25-10 first quarter in favor of North Marion proved too much to overcome in an 80-61 loss.

Oak Glen finishes its season at 4-19. North Marion improves to 16-7 and will play Fairmont Senior on Friday.

"They came out and were hot from the start," Oak Glen coach Dave Smith said. "It wasn't that we weren't getting out on them, they just made their shots. It put us in a severe hole.

"We cut it down to seven in the third quarter and even made a run in the fourth quarter, but it just wasn't quite enough."

North Marion's Matt Cain gave the Bears problems all night. The 6-foot-2 senior guard came into the game averaging 10.7 per contest but exploded for 31 points, 14 in the first quarter.

The Bears saw two players score career highs in the losing effort. Matt McLaughlin finished with 18 points and five assists, while Brennan Smith netted 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Cody Howell finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for Oak Glen, while Tyler Click added seven points.

This season marked the first with Oak Glen for Smith since the 2003-04 campaign. Smith said he believes the future is bright for the Bears.

"We were kind of behind the eight-ball from the beginning with a late start," he said. "We didn't have the proper time to prepare. But, I love the group we have coming back. We've just got to refocus our efforts and work hard to make this program relevant again."

Oak Glen will graduate four seniors in McLaughlin, Howell, Taylor Kincaid and Trey Smith.

"Those four guys are a credit to Oak Glen High School," Smith said. "I wish we had more time with them. I've said from the start that I couldn't have had a better group. They put forth great effort. They play for each other. I just really enjoyed being around them."
