STEUBENVILLE - The city's Fair Housing Practices Commission approved training programs for Fair Housing Month in April during the regular meeting Monday night.

The commission agreed to hold two training sessions on April 22 and two sessions on April 23.

According the Urban Projects Director Chris Petrossi, an accessible design workshop will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Eastern Gateway Community College Pugliese Center for all contractors, developers, property managers, landlords and design professionals.

"This training session has been organized through a cooperative effort between the Steubenville Planning and Zoning Commission, the Fair Housing programs of Steubenville and Jefferson County and the Ohio Valley Fair Housing Center," explained Petrossi.

Petrossi said the workshop will provide participants with information regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as:

Ohio building code requirements.

Fair Housing Act accessibility requirements.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Other state and federal standards and laws.

The deadline for registration for the free workshop is April 12.

"Please call the planning commission at (740) 283-6000, extension 1700, by April 12 to register for the free workshop. Architect P. Mark Viola will be the presenter for the workshop," said Petrossi.

"We are also planning a Steubenville and Jefferson County tenant training program starting at 6:30 p.m. on April 22 in the second floor community room in the Ohio Valley Towers. Tenants will be provided with information regarding their rights and responsibilities, security deposits, why leases are important, how to get your landlord to make repairs and what to do in case of an eviction," Petrossi explained.

"And although the workshop will be directed at tenants, the information also will be valuable for landlords as well," noted Petrossi.

"The workshop is free and pre-registration is preferred by calling the Fair Housing Commission office at (740) 283-6000, extension 1700. Rob Johns and Tom Zani of Southeastern Ohio Legal Services will present this workshop," Petrossi said.

He also said a fair housing training session for case managers, social workers and other social service professionals will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on April 23 in the second floor community room at the Ohio Valley Towers.

"This training session is free, but pre-registration is required. Interested participants should call (740) -283-6000, extension 1706, by April 12. Two hours of continuing professional education units have been approved for this training from the Ohio Counselor, Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapist Board for social workers. Carl White of the Regional Housing Center in Columbus will conduct the session," stated Petrossi.

Petrossi said training for the Jefferson Metropolitan Housing Authority staff is set from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 23 at the John F. Kennedy apartment building.
