Easter cross campaign kicks off

February 22, 2013
The Herald-Star

The first of five Easter cross distribution days will be held Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Word of Life Fellowship located at 565 Lovers Lane, Steubenville.

The distribution effort is associated with the Easter Cross Project, a campaign sponsored by the Valley Pastors Network "in response to the deteriorating morality evident in our area," according to a spokesman.

The Easter Cross Project's mission is to promote the idea of unity throughout the city by placing a cross, representing the cross of Christ, in the yard of each household in the city of Steubenville.

"This mission will be accomplished by sending out distribution teams, comprised of volunteers from churches throughout the Valley, into different areas of Steubenville," according to a news release. The teams will be sent out from different churches each Saturday for five Saturdays, beginning tomorrow and ending on March 23.

The campaign concludes with an ecumenical service planned for Good Friday, March 29, at First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville at noon. The service will be followed by the Christ Walk set to begin at 1 p.m. in which individuals are encouraged to walk, holding their crosses, as they proceed from First Westminster Presbyterian Church to Crossroads Christian Church in Wintersville.

Beyond the first cross distribution day Saturday, remaining distribution dates and locations are:

March 2, 9:30 a.m., Tower of Power, 1310 Maryland Ave., Steubenville;

March 9, 9:30 a.m., Holy Family Catholic Church, 2565 Alexander Ave., Steubenville;

March 16, 9:30 a.m., Calvary Pentecostal Church, 255 S. Fifth St., Steubenville; and

March 23, 9:30 a.m., Starkdale Presbyterian Church, 4600 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.

The Easter crosses are to be placed in the yard on Good Friday with the blank side showing. On Easter morning, they are to be turned to reveal the words "Jesus is Risen."

Any donations collected during the event will benefit Urban Mission Ministries located at 301 N. Fifth St., Steubenville. The Easter Cross Project is open to participation from anyone. For information, call (740) 264-1227 or (304) 748-4422.
