Center takes chill off with cook-off

SMITHFIELD - A chili cook-off on Saturday was one of the first events of the year held at the Brightway Center located at 2511 County Road 15.

The event brought out 10 cooks who offered everything from mild and medium chili to sizzling hot chili. The popular vote by the tasting public brought about a $50 winner.

Virginia Young, service board chairman, presented the $50 check to Melissa Kenny for winning the people's choice award. Brenda Harris was the second-place contestant.

The Brightway Center is a Christian leadership development facility allowing youth to participate in academic activities, athletic competition, Bible studies, seminars and workshops, according to officials.

The event was staged by the service board and the help of Brightway volunteers.

"We are thankful for the service board. They are invested in our center and use their time and finances to further projects," said Daryle Griffin, president and CEO. "I look forward to many more events sponsored by the service board, including the upcoming spaghetti dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 2, when area pastors are invited to prepare their specialty sauce in a contest for the Golden Ladle' award.

The dinner is held for the public to attend to eat and cast their votes. The contest is open to any pastor in the area who wants to match skills with other members of the cloth, it was noted. A 3K walk will be held May 4, and it will be a local walk scheduled in the Smithfield area, More details will be provided later, officials said.

The Kara's Kids youth program is held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each Thursday and a Fund Fest with guest speakers will be held at 4 p.m. March 30.

A candy gram fundraiser is now in progress, with delivery to be made on Thursday, Valentine's Day.
