Helen Bender

BENDER, Helen C., 76, of Bloomingdale, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at home surrounded by her family.

Born in Tennessee in 1936 Helen was a graduate of the Catholic Girls' Boarding School, St. Cecelia Academy in Nashville.

She moved to Ohio, where she became a licensed cosmetologist and lived in Akron, Cleveland and Rossford. She moved to Jefferson County in 1972. She was an instructor at the former Clark, Gilbert and Silverthorne Beauty Academy in Steubenville, and an instructor at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School. Helen also worked at the former St. John Vianney Seminary in Bloomingdale. She was the owner/operator of Helen's Hair Care in Bloomingdale. Helen was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Wintersville and was a member of the Upper Ohio Valley Camera Club.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Bender, her parents, Richard and Verdia Layne Gilliam, brother, Richard Basil Gilliam and sister, Mary Edna Gilliam Willis.

Helen is survived by her son, Phillip (Vicki) Bender of Bloomingdale and son, Paul (Rhonda) Bender of Willowick, OH. She also leaves five grandchildren, Phillip Bender, Jr. and Eric Bender of Bloomingdale, Tiffany (Anthony) Crawford of Columbus, OH, Meghan Bender of Oakland, CA and Erin Bender of Athens, OH.

As Helen requested, there will be no visitation. A funeral liturgy with Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Church, Wintersville, OH, with Msgr. Kurt Kemo, celebrant. Burial will be in Ft. Steuben Burial Estates. Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, 852 Main Street, Wintersville, OH 43953 or Charity Hospice, Inc., PO Box 2483, 500 Luray Drive, Wintersville, OH 43953.
