Betty Armitage

ARMITAGE, Betty Jane, 88, of Overland Park, KS, formerly of Steubenville and Columbus, OH, died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Delmar Gardens at Overland Park in Kansas.

She was born in Wellsville, Ohio on December 28, 1924, a daughter of the late Theodore R. and Jean Marie Hood Higgins. She was a 1942 Graduate of Steubenville High School.

Betty worked as chief teletype operator/bookkeeper at Western Union in Steubenville until shortly after her marriage.

She married James Lawrence Armitage on February 21, 1945 in the base chapel at Stinson Field, San Antonio, Texas. They were married for 64 years.

In 2007 Betty and Jim moved to Columbus, Ohio to be near their son, Brian. Soon after Jim's death in 2009, Betty moved to Kansas to be with her daughter, Karen.

Betty's principal interests had always been her family, her church and her home. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. She was a member of La Belle View United Methodist Church until it closed when membership was transferred to the Wintersville United Methodist Church.

She sang in the LaBelle View church choir since the age of 15. Known for her beautiful soprano voice, she was a popular soloist for area weddings, church services and other religious and civic functions. She and Jim both sang with the Civic Choral Society and the Stanton Chorus.

Known affectionately as "Mrs. A," Betty taught Sunday School and counseled the church's Youth Fellowship group during her children's formative years through high school.

She is a former member of the United Methodist Women, YWCA, LaBelle Chapter 414 Order of Eastern Star, and the Serve Others Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons. She was also involved in Love For Children, God's Pantry and Urban Mission Ministry.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her stepfather William H. Wool and her brother-in-law Richard W. Roush.

She is survived by her sister Vivian L. Roush of Steubenville; children Brian J. Armitage (Tatiana) of Boquete, Panama, Janine L. Bartram of Morgantown, WV and Karen S. Boggia (Vince) of Olathe, KS; niece, Debra Edwards (Robert) of Naperville, IL.

Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Rd., Wintersville, OH, on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., where funeral services will be held on Saturday, 10 a.m. with her daughter Janine L. Bartram officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Lung Association.
