Ball to drop on Wellsburg, too

WELLSBURG - Area residents looking for a low-key but fun way to ring in the new year should consider stopping by the Wellsburg Town Square, where the city's own New Year's Eve ball and a fireworks display will mark the arrival of 2013.

The fireworks will be launched at midnight from the 12th Street boat ramp and may be viewed from many places in the city as well as the town square. Provided by Pyrotecnico of New Castle, Pa., the fireworks are provided with city funds allocated by Wellsburg Council.

Mayor Sue Simonetti said the family-friendly festivities on the town square will begin at 10 p.m. and include music supplied by disc jockey Matt Stromeyer and hot chocolate and cookies served inside City Hall.

Stromeyer is among Brooke County 4-H leaders and members assisting Francine Kraus, the city's collector-treasurer, and Randy Yost, the city's wastewater superintendent, with the event.

Yost again set up and lower the lighted sphere made by vocational students at Brooke High School for the occasion in 2007.

The ball is 5 feet in diameter, weighs more than 70 pounds and is rigged with more than 200 Christmas lights.

A small set of bleachers will be set up for those who want to sit.

Yost also will be launching shirts commemorating the event with a special launcher.

The event also offers people a chance to see the square and its Christmas tree lit at night. The tree was donated by Pikevue Nursery of Wellsburg, while volunteers dressed up the square with decorations donated by Tom and Mark Cipoletti, Brenda Zurbuch and Dr. Dave Edwards.

Over the years the Wellsburg Garden Club also has decorated parking meters along nearby Charles Street for the season.

Kraus, who has often brought her grandchildren to the event, said it's a nice way for families to celebrate the new year together.

"We always have a fun time there," she said.
