WHEELING - The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is traditionally the busiest time of year for public ice skating at Wheeling Park's Memorial Skating Rink, according to Wheeling Park Operations Manager Nat Goudy.

While the storm that blanketed the Ohio Valley with snow and ice Wednesday curbed the crowd slightly, things began picking up again by Thursday afternoon, Goudy said.

"This is our week," said Goudy.

FUN ON THE ICE — Kids skated around the Wheeling Park Memorial Skating Rink earlier this week. This time of the year is said to be the rink’s busiest time of the year.

He noted this is always the busiest time of year for the ice rink, partly because students are on break from school and people are visiting for the holidays.

"There are good crowds. ... The kids seem to be enjoying themselves, and a lot of families have been coming out on weekends," he added.

Michelle Romanek of Wheeling said while her daughter is often at the ice rink practicing her skills, both her son and daughter were just enjoying time with friends Thursday.

"My daughter plays hockey, so we're always skating here anyway," Romanek said, adding she has been bringing her children to the rink for the past eight seasons - since her daughter was only 4 years old.

Robert Martin of Wheeling said was just enjoying time with his family at the rink Thursday.

"My sister is in town, and I brought my two daughters, Emma and Opal. ... I bring them every couple of weeks," said Martin. "Opal has skated three times now, and today she did really well."

Wheeling native Nick Teufel, who now resides in Dallas, said he thought his five children would enjoy visiting the ice rink while they were in town for the holidays.

Goudy said the rink will stay open until the second Sunday in March.
