Looking for justice

December 30, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

I lived in Steubenville for more than 30 years and was proud to call it home. I heard recently about the criminal acts allegedly perpetrated by members of the Big Red football team and, it seems, fostered and encouraged by the coaches and staff of Steubenville High School.

I cannot find enough words to express how appalled and disgusted I am by this act toward a young high school student. It does not matter how drunk she may have been. No one deserves to be violated. No one asks to be violated and have their pictures publicized without their permission. The act is criminal. It is vile. And the coaches, staff, parents, attorneys and citizens who give credence to this violence are just as criminal.

I'm sure this not a new occurrence for this football team. After all, they are put on a pedestal in the Ohio Valley. The rules have always been different for them.

I hope justice is served for the victim of this crime and that she is able to recover from it. She will never forget it. The damage is likely permanent. The Big Red football team is responsible for that.

For the perpetrators, life is forever stained by a violent, stupid act. It must be great for them to be big macho jocks.
