Maximize efficiency of city operations

December 16, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

As the city of Steubenville addresses the inevitable budget issues that all municipalities across the state are now facing, it would be both sensible and wise on the part of City Council to weigh the importance of each department's function and the value it provides to the community.

In so doing, it is hoped that City Council, the mayor and the city manager would serve its citizens well by keeping policemen and firemen exempt from cuts since they represent the most crucial, and in some cases, life-saving aspects of city government.

Without safety in the streets and a means of quickly reacting to disasters as they unfortunately occur, it matters little what other programs and facilities are offered, since they may be inaccessible or unsafe for participants to utilize.

With that being said, perhaps the best way for the city to make additions is not through subtraction, but by determining where we are deficient in communicating or enforcing current policy in hopes to maximize the efficiency of municipal operations.
