Bruins knock off Red Riders

WELLSBURG - With 4:30 left in the game and Brooke leading Weir 37-30, things appeared to swing to the Red Riders' side when Bruins' leading scorer Angela Staffileno fouled out.

Michaela Hinerman and the rest of the Bruins proved to be up to the task, though, as they held off a Weir rally en route to a 45-41 victory Thursday at the Brooke Athletic Complex.

"It was good for the team," said Brooke head coach Ryan Scherich of the win. "They came to practice yesterday and worked their butts off. We told them after the Park game (Tuesday's 98-30 loss to Wheeling Park) that it's over, it's done with, we took our lumps from the two best teams in the state, and now it's a new season.

"They came, busted their butts yesterday, and it paid off today."

After Staffileno picked up her fifth foul, Hinerman scored five of the Bruins' final eight points on a pair of layups and a free throw. She also played tough defense throughout the game to help lead her team to victory.

"I told them in the locker room (after the game), 'don't take this the wrong way, but when Angela fouled out what do you think everyone thought in the stands?'" said Scherich. "They said, 'we're probably going to lose.' I said to them 'then you got to prove everybody wrong.' I'm proud of them."

The Red Riders pulled within three points twice within the final 1:20, but each time the Bruins knocked down a foul shot - one by Emily Stuck and one by Marena Cline - to push the game back to a two-possession lead.

"This is a very simple ball game," said Weir head coach Bill Smith. "You've got to rebound. You've got to box out and rebound. You can't give anyone second-chance shots.

"If you don't execute that's what's going to happen. Tonight they played better than us."

"We usually shoot better than this, but they had the initiative to come out and play well and got a lead."

Staffileno was dominant before being forced to sit down, scoring 23 points to go with 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Hinerman scored 11 in supports, all of which came in the second half. Cline added seven for the Bruins.

"Michaela was huge in the second half," said Scherich. "She had all her points in the second half. Those girls stepped up. They did what they needed to to win."

Brooke's biggest issue was from the free throw line where the team shot 12-of-28 for the evening.

"The only thing I'm disappointed with them is going 5-for-16 from the line in the fourth quarter," said Scherich. "We have to bury our foul shots. It shouldn't have even been a contest if we make our foul shots with Angela in or not."

Shelva Burns had a strong performance in the loss, scoring 18 points and pulling down nine boards. Raven Young and Alyssa Shingle added eight points each for the Red Riders who shot 12-for-19 from the charity stripe.

Brooke (1-3) heads to John Marshall Monday while Weir (0-2) hosts North Marion Saturday.

"We'll be back tomorrow in the gym," said Smith. "We've got to work. We've got North Marion Saturday so there's no easy steps.

"Tomorrow we'll regroup and get ready for North Marion. That's the great thing about sports, there's always tomorrow."
