Golden Bears beat Red Riders

December 5, 2012
From staff reports , The Herald-Star

NEW MANCHESTER - It doesn't get any better than beating your rival in overtime in the season opener.

That's exactly what the Bears did on Tuesday defeating the visiting Red Riders, 61-60.

The game was tight from start to finish. Oak Glen held a one-point lead after the first quarter and went into the half up by just three.

Heading into the final frame, the Bears had a five-point advantage, but the Red Riders closed the gap to force overtime.

Helping keep Weir in the game was its shooting from long range. The Red Riders connected on 12 three-pointers to none for the Bears.

Leading the offensive charge for Oak Glen was freshman Logan Andrews, who started her high school career in style with a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

Returning standout Vanessa Hissam, a junior, chipped in with 14 points, 16 rebounds and six steals. Jessica Stivason also finished with 14 points and added 13 rebounds.

Alyssa Shingle led Weir with 17 points, followed by Taylor Young and Shelva Burns with 14 each.

Up next for Oak Glen is a road game against Steubenville Catholic Central Monday.

Bruins fall to Patriots

WHEELING - The Brooke girls basketball team dropped a 98-30 decision at Wheeling Park Tuesday.

Angela Staffileno led the Bruins with 20 points, shooting seven-of-14 from the field and five-of-eight from the foul line.

While Staffileno had a good night no other Brooke players scored more than three thanks to a suffocating Patriots' defense.

''The last two games were against No. 1 (Morgantown) and No. 2 (Wheeling Park) in the state ," Brooke coach Ryan Scherich said. ''Our turnovers in the first half were really disappointing. We played Morgantown last Friday and we were able to get them out of their pressure into a half-court defense. (Tuesday), it really bothered us but I thought we played halfway decent when we got into our halfcourt sets.

''I told the kids to keep their heads up. This is done and the main thing we want to do is learn from our mistakes and play better the next time out.''

The Bruins (0-3) travel to Weir Thursday.
