Turkey, stuffing and potatoes, oh my

Thanksgiving for me equals two days, three feasts and lots and lots of food. And, of course, all the things I have to be thankful for.

Feast one kicked off at 11 a.m. at my in-laws'. My favorite dish at this location would be sweet potato casserole.

My husband's aunt made 10 pounds of potatoes, enough to feed an army and not just the 10 people on hand. And she peeled them all by hand. I made fun of her because she has a potato peeler that would have cut her time spent on them in half. She forgot last year, too. Until she remembers, I guess I will have to continue to poke fun at her.

Feast two was at 4 p.m. at my mom and her husband's. Well, they said 4, but they are both habitually late for most things. I think we finally ate at a little before 5. Favorite dish at the location would be the stuffing.

Going to my mom's is always different because there aren't always the same things you expect at a Thanksgiving dinner. Her husband is Italian and can cook. So can my mom, but we never had that much food before she met him. I guess the tradition is to add a new recipe to the feast every year. This year, they did something different with the green beans. But we also had brussell sprouts, carrots with parsnips, fennel with cheese and sausage with mushrooms. I passed on the fennel because they told me it tends to taste like anise. Yuck. I can't even stand the smell of the stuff.

Feast three was moved to Saturday (thank God) at 1 p.m. at my Dad and stepmom's. The favorite dish at that house would be the homemade noodles, which I vow to learn to make someday.

We eat in shifts at my dad's house because there are so many people and very little room in the kitchen. By the time dinner was over, my stepmom said that all that was left was a little turkey and cole slaw (and that was because they forgot to get it out). It was a relaxing day because no one had to run off to be somewhere else for dinner.

My picky Little Man ate nothing but pickles, crackers and a biscuit. Oh, and the whipped cream off of a piece of pumpkin pie. All day. I don't know how he keeps up the energy to go, go go like he does. I have been told not to worry though. "He'll eat when he's hungry" said both his pediatrician and Dr. Phil.

In addition to all the wonderful food, I have been blessed with many things this year: my son, who I could not be more proud of; my husband, who would do anything for me and our families; the unborn baby growing inside me, who I can't wait to meet; my parents; my aunt, who had a health scare this year, and thanks to prayers to God, is OK; my in-laws and the rest of my extended family; and the health of everyone I love. I can't thank God enough for what I have.

While I pray the blessings from heaven never stop, I am sad to say that the Thanksgiving feasts have come to an end. I have to wait another year for all the goodies. My friend asked me if I ate my weight in Thanksgiving dishes. Let's just hope my doctor doesn't yell at me for gaining too much.

What can I say - the baby likes Thanksgiving.
