MLK Association prayer breakfast held

Franciscan University of Steubenville served as the host of the annual Martin Luther King Association prayer breakfast Nov. 10 where approximately 100 people gathered in the St. Joseph Center on the campus.

The breakfast marks the start of the MLK celebration that will culminate in January.

James Baber, president of the organization, expressed his gratitude to the Rev. Richard Davis, TOR, vice president for community relations at the university, for hosting the event.

Other participants in the program included Delores Wiggins, minister of music; the Rev. Maurice Lawson; the Rev. Vaughn Foster; the Rev. Alfred Hunt; soloist Linda Spencer of Weirton; Marie Jones of Greater Zion Temple Church; Anthony Mougianis, representing Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church; Sharon Kirtdoll, who introduced keynote speaker the Rev. Ashley Steele, executive director of Urban Mission Ministries; and Carol Ann Simmons.

Simmons previewed January events for the association which will include the children's program on Jan. 19 at the MLK Center with Duane Jennings as the chairperson; the ecumenical service on Jan. 20, with Baber as its chair; and the Jan. 21 memorial march and program which includes the essay contest co-chaired by Angela Kirtdoll-Suggs and Anita Jackson. Times and locations will be announced in December.

Lucas Gallabrese, a student volunteer from Catholic Central High School, was the registration chair for the event, assisted by his mother, by Mary Sue Gallabrese. Jackson, director of community relations at the university and member of the MLK Association, coordinated the breakfast for Franciscan.
