Web-a-thon a fun way to help others

The campaigns of local United Ways are well under way, and every dollar donated helps so many of your friends and neighbors in so many ways.

The United Way of Jefferson County, for instance, has collected 45 percent toward its goal of $440,000, while the Weirton United Way has reached 53 percent of its goal of $280,000, and the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, which serves Brooke County, stands at 25 percent of its goal of $777,777.

With the holidays right around the corner, officials with the campaigns are preparing to make big pushes to ensure the goals are reached.

Those efforts include various special events, such as Thursday's Web-a-thon planned by the United Way of Jefferson County.

Produced from the newsroom of the Herald-Star, the Internet-only telecast will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will provide profiles of member agencies, offer recognition to donors and give viewers a chance to meet some of the many volunteers whose tireless work ensures the goal is always met.

Thursday's event will be part of the organization's call center, from which volunteers will be contacting area individuals and businesses to remind them about their annual donations.

The United Way's first Web-a-thon, which was held in January, was a success, generating money for the organization and helping launch the final push toward reaching that campaign's goal. Organizers, who include campaign chair Tony Mougianis and Executive Director Beth Rupert-Warren, hope this edition will generate similar results.

All they need to make that happen is for the residents of our area to step forward and show their willingness to help others in our community.
