From staff reports

CHARLESTON - The Bears are two steps closer to defending their title.

Oak Glen earned two wins on Friday during the West Virginia Class AA State Volleyball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

The Bears (39-6) defeated James Monroe and Frankfort to advance to today's 10:30 a.m. championship match against Ritchie County, a winner over Philip Barbour in the other semifinal.

Despite dropping only two games on the day, Oak Glen coach Ethel Riser said she wants her team to play more consistent.

"We were doing fine and then all of a sudden we stopped passing, serving, hitting," she said.

"Nothing went right for us for a while. Then, we turn around and kill them the next game.

"We've got to quit losing focus and be really consistent all the way through. We can't afford those kind of lapses. We've got to be consistently good."

Against James Monroe, Oak Glen came away with a 25-15, 25-8, 16-25, 25-12 victory.

In their second match of the day, the Bears beat Frankfort 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15.

On the day, Sydney Kell finished with 28 points, 130 sets, 25 assists, two spikes, two kills and five blocks, while Vanessa Hissam added four points, 27 spikes and nine kills and one block.

Morgan Poling had 16 points, 14 spikes, 23 kills, 11 blocks and six digs, and Lacee Porter had 18 points, 13 spikes, seven digs and 21 kills.

Abby Tice finished with 7 points, 7 spikes, six digs and two kills, while Jessica Stivason added 15 spikes, 15 kills and 11 blocks.

Jessica Hutton had 13 points, three aces, one spike and one kill, and Caitlyn Smith had 16 points and 13 digs.

Carissa Williams finished with 63 sets and seven assists, while Madison Juszczak added nine points, two spikes, three kills and two blocks.

Oak Glen whipped Ritchie County last week 25-20, 25-10, 25-21 to win the Region 1 tournament

A win today would be the fifth state title for Oak Glen.
