WELLSBURG - Brooke County voters have chosen Chuck Jackson, chief sheriff's deputy under current Sheriff Richard Ferguson, to take over the sheriff's job in January.

Jackson faced no Republican challenger, but former Brooke County Sheriff Mike Allman, whom he had defeated on the Democratic ticket in May's primary election, filed as an official write-in candidate for Tuesday's general election.

Allman's name didn't appear on ballots, but it was posted at polling sites and voters could submit his name through the write-in option on the county's electronic voting machines.

Jackson received 5,725 votes, about 67 percent of those cast, while 2,731 write-in votes were counted. County Clerk Sylvia Benzo said the number of those write-ins cast for Allman hadn't been determined at about midnight.

Totals for the election were delayed until then by a problem with a voting machine in the 34th Precinct, where voters cast ballots at Lauretta B. Millsop Primary School. But by midnight all votes, including 1,679 early votes, and 248 absentee votes, had been counted.

A total of 9,469 of 17,512 registered voters in the county turned out for the election.

All totals are unofficial until ballots are canvassed on Tuesday.

"I'm very pleased voters chose met to be sheriff of Brooke County," Jackson said. "I'm not a politician, I'm a career policeman, and that's what they elected."

Jackson had retired after 22 years in the West Virginia State Police, for which he served as a captain and troop commander, when he was recruited by Ferguson in 2004 to serve as chief sheriff's deputy.

He said as sheriff, "Everything I do will be geared toward giving the public a professional sheriff's department that will work to address the drug problem and crime."

No other county races were opposed by Tuesday's election.
