Levy not all about the kids

October 28, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

Let's talk about the Edison Local School District levy. Those who are working so hard to get this levy passed say it's all about the kids - is it? I don't think so.

Everyone who works for the district will still get hospitalization for practically nothing. This money will add to their pensions and they will probably be asking for pay raises.

Let's look at the other side. Hundreds of property owners are on fixed incomes, and some have lost part or all of their hospitalization as well as their pensions.

We know property taxes are going to go up, but they don't talk about these things. All they say is that it's for the kids.

The only thing Gov. John Kasich asked was to go to arbitration and pay a little more on their health care and retirement. As of now, Edison's full-time employees pay only 5 percent and taxpayers pay 95 percent. These facts are from the article "SB 5 will affect health care," that appeared in the Herald-Star on June 20, 2011.

I think the time has come for those who work so hard to get these levies passed to spend more time in Columbus lobbying their legislators to get a fair way to fund schools. Use some of that effort that you used in the last election to get SB 5 defeated. Then we can all have an extra buck to buy something nice for Christmas.
