Lady Royals claim title

GENEVA - The Jefferson County Christian volleyball team won the SouthWestern Christian Athletic Conference championship for the first time in school history Tuesday at Geneva College with a 25-26, 25-17, 21-25, 25-15 victory over First Baptist.

The Lady Royals dropped four sets in their 52 sets of league play, including the playoffs.

Lani Moro led JCCS with 11 points, 15 assists, six digs and three kills. Meadow Jackson added seven points, eight kills and five digs; Theresa Recznik nine kills, five blocks and 11 digs; and Alyssa Beadle 11 points, seven kills and five digs.

Mary Bernadette Miravalle delivered 10 points and five digs, Melanie Lewis three kills, Margie Kissinger four points, Kassie Lucas nine points and eight assists and Breona Brown two points, two kills and two assists.

The Lady Royals reached the championship game with a 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-12 victory over Evangel Heights Christian Academy.

Lucas totaled nine points, Recznik eight points, eight kills, six blocks and 11 digs; Beadle seven points, six kills and seven digs; Jackson five points and four kills; Lewis five points and eight digs; Moro five points, 14 assists and three kills; Miravalle five points and three blocks; Missinger four points and Brown five assists.

JCCS concludes its season tonight at Madonna with a tri-match including Bishop Donahue in the Blue Dons' annual Pink Out event.

Chafin records an ace

CHESTER - Dave Chafin recorded a hole-in-one at Mountaineer Woodview Golf Course. He used a 6-iron on the 135-yard par 3 fifth hole. The shot was witnessed by Ted Ameredes, Bob West and Kelly Cooper.

Riders fall in five

WEIRTON - The Weir High volleyball team dropped a 28-26, 20-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-9 decision to Wheeling Park.

For the Red Riders, Erin Hawthorne totaled 48 digs; Samantha McCartney 52 sets and three digs; Ontasia Petteway two kills, three digs and two blocks; and Haley McLaughlin 10 digs and 61 sets.

Kimberlyn Persina contributed 20 kills, three aces, eight blocks and eight digs; Selena Wolverton six kills, 26 digs and five aces; Elizabeth Kush eight kills and 26 digs; Morgan Goff six digs and four kills; Michayla Dobosz six kills; and Lauren Rosnick 12 digs and three aces.
