HAMMONDSVILLE - A state grant to assist the district in preparing for new state guidelines was discussed during Tuesday's Edison Local School District's board meeting.

The district has received a $3,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education to prepare teachers, pupils and students for new curriculum to be taught beginning in 2014, according to Bill Beattie, district superintendent.

"We found out we received a pilot grant for new assessments required (to be taught) from the Ohio Department of Education," said Beattie. "In 2014 the (state) will require new assessments we will be teaching. We're going to be using (the program grant) for English, language arts and social studies."

Beattie said the two-year grant will pay for teachers and work involved in the program.

In other business, the board adopted a resolution to place the district's 9.45-mill levy proposal on the February ballot. Beattie said the board had to do so to meet the early filing deadline for the February election.

"The elections have been moved up a month from March to February," said Beattie, adding the filing deadline for the February election is Nov. 2.

If the district's levy proposal passes on the Nov. 6 ballot, the district will remove the proposal in the February election.

"We are going to have an informational meeting (about the levy proposal) at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Edison High School auditorium," said Beattie.

Also during Tuesday's meeting, the board:

received letters of support for its pending levy proposal from the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School and Toronto City Schools. The board also in turn voted to endorse levies on the Nov. 6 ballot for the Jefferson County JVS and the Indian Creek Local and Buckeye Local school districts.

accepted a $2,000 donation from the Bergholz Community Foundation to help offset the cost of a resource officer and approved a youth league basketball league for pupils grades first through sixth.

There will be a special board meeting at 6 p.m on Oct. 23 at the high school, while the regular meeting is set for 5 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Edison High School.
