STEUBENVILLE - Two individuals were sentenced Thursday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Court Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr.

Todd P. Sweeney, 43, of Apartment 62, 4508 Scioto Drive, was sentenced to six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center and one year's probation after pleading guilty to one count of vehicular assault.

Sweeney's vehicle was found parked going in the wrong direction on the John Scott Connector on Sept. 22, 2010. City Police Patrolman James Sloane reached into the car to try to put the transmission in park but couldn't reach. Sweeney, who was passed out, put his foot on the accelerator and the vehicle started moving forward, said Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin.

The car started to drift backward and Sloane was unable to get out of the way of the car door, police reported. Sloane jumped to escape the rolling vehicle and received scrapes and bruises, police reported. The car ended up in a ditch, police reported.

Leroy D. Benjamin, 23, of 329 S. Fifth St. was sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to single counts of having a weapon as a convicted felon and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle after a highway patrol stop on June 11 in which a loaded firearm was found in a vehicle.
