NEW CUMBERLAND - Sunday afternoon rain drops weren't powerful enough to dampen the spirits of those who enjoyed the fourth-annual New Cumberland Fall River Fest.

George Hines III, city community service director, said a minimum of 1,200 people enjoyed the festivities on Saturday, which was warm and sunny, and while he expected a lower turnout for Sunday, the event was still a huge success.

"It's been a huge success," he said. "People have come from all over."

Hines said he believes the most popular events were the Joseph Sisters, a country soul group, and the fireworks show. He said the fireworks were set off from the Ohio River bank and set off over the river.

"Everyone realizes when it rains you're going to take a hit," he said, noting the festival had an estimated 41 food and craft vendors, the most in its history.

Brian Forsythe, who ran a stand selling cabbage and noodles, said while foot traffic was a little slow on Sunday afternoon, Saturday had been a great day, and he thought the stand was doing well.

"The cold weather has brought out some warm appetites," he said.

Mary Fiedorczyk ran a stand selling pajama bottoms. She said she enjoyed the flow of people on Saturday, many of whom stopped to talk with her.

Debbie Mercer said she wasn't bothered by the rain, and she came to River Fest to get a sandwich and some peanut butter fudge.
