SIMMONS, Raymond L., 89, of Bloomingdale, Ohio, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Trinity West.
He was born June 30, 1923, in Bloomingdale a son of the late Lee H. and Ruby Baker Simmons.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and attended Smithfield U.M. Church. Member of Unionport Masonic Lodge 333 F&AM. Ray was a retired claims manager for Nationwide Insurance.
Ray served in the Marine Corps during WWII having received two Purple Hearts and was a member of Cincinnati Chapter 18 Fourth Marine Division and the Marine Corps Band of Brothers. He received a letter of commendation from C.B. Cates, Major General, U.S.M.C. for excellent service as a machine gun ammunition carrier during action against enemy Japanese forces in the invasion and capture of Saipan and Tinian, Marianna Islands. Ray also had served as an honorary guard at Franklin Delano Roosevelt's summer home "Shangri- La."
Preceding Ray in death were his son Jerry Simmons in 2009 and sister Helen Cusick.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy M. Beveridge Simmons, whom he would have celebrated his 70th anniversary of marriage with on Oct. 31, 2012; daughter Judy Hare and her companion David Galbraith of Bloomingdale; brother Ralph O. Simmons of Bloomingdale; four grandsons Michael Simmons, Mark Simmons, Ryan Simmons, all of the Akron-Canton area and Scott (Jamie) Sagrilla of Hilliard, OH; great grandchildren Taylor, Benny, Zack, Raymond (RJ) and Olivia.
Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, OH on Sunday 1-3 and 6-8 p.m., where funeral services will be held Monday 10 a.m. with Rev. Ed Gardner officiating. Burial at Bloomingdale Cemetery.
