STEUBENVILLE - Jerry Barilla is on the map. So are Jim Emmerling and his wife, Leanne, Marty Hauser and a host of other familiar faces.

All told, more than 100 civic leaders, businesses and institutions have been immortalized on our Steubenville Fun Map, a 36-by-24-inch snapshot of life in our community.

It's a colorful representation of the faces and places that make Steubenville ... well, one of a kind.

"We were looking for something we could have a little bit of fun with while helping local businesses promote themselves and the community. This map is the perfect vehicle for that," said Alex Marshall, publisher of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times.

The map, designed by local artist Lillian Brue, captures the flavor of the community: The laid-back Barilla, for instance, is flashing a peace sign while standing in front of his business, Frank and Jerry's Furniture and Appliances. Alan Hall, director of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, is lugging a stack of heavy books. Art imitates life with Marshall depicted tugging at his necktie, and Executive Editor Ross Gallabrese, shown with his arms crossed and wearing his familiar suspenders.

"I tried to make it personal," Brue says. "Every figure has a little nuance, a little attitude. I wanted to show it in my work."

"Lillian's work is superb," Marshall said. "The map truly captures the flavor of our community."

On Monday, framed copies will be delivered to all 100-plus community leaders and institutions represented on the map. Additional copies will be available for $1 at the Herald-Star offices, 401 Herald Square, while supplies last.

"Everybody's really excited to be part of it," said Cindy Kotsch, special events and marketing coordinator for the newspapers. "And I'm excited to show it to them. I think everybody's going to be thrilled with what they see, it's just so well done."

Kotsch said one of the most intriguing aspects of the map is that no matter how often you look at it, there always seems to be something new to catch the eye.

Plans are already in the works to do a fun map for Wintersville, Richmond and Toronto in October, and Weirton, Follansbee and Wellsburg early in 2013.

And to add to the fun, Marshall said the Herald-Star and WOGH-FM are planning a weeklong contest based on the map.

"We're still in the process of finalizing the details," Marshall said, " but it will be a daily contest testing the powers of observation of area residents. We'll see how observant our community is, and have a lot of fun in the process."
