STEUBENVILLE - The mother of a 14-year-old girl came to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department on Monday to report the girl was raped in April, said Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
Abdalla said the girl told her mother Sunday about the incident.
Abdalla said the alleged rape occurred in Steubenville, and the mother was referred to City Police.
Abdalla wouldn't comment on whether the rape was connected to another rape investigation that began on Aug. 14, when parents came to the police station to report the sexual assault of their daughter. That investigation resulted in charges being filed against two Steubenville High School athletes and students.
City Police Chief William McCafferty said the girl and her mother are expected to be interviewed today by a juvenile detective. The chief said the mother was contacted via Facebook that her daughter was the victim of a sexual assault.
