To the editor:

Friends of Smithfield Development Corp. would like to thank all those who attended the historical marker dedication held July 28 at the Quaker Cemetery in Smithfield.

Our appreciation goes to those who participated in the program: Mayor Ted Boyd, Thomas E. Graham, chair of the Jefferson County commissioners; Cathy Nelson of the Ohio Historical Society; Derol Martin, elder of Friends Evangelical Church; Tom McCain, commander of the Piney Fork American Legion; and Cindy Straus Grace, who served as mistress of ceremonies.

Special thanks to our speakers, Diane Matthews Rodd, project researcher; Nancy Dalton, who represented Shaffer Chapel of McIntyre; and John S. Maddox, curator of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing.

Following the event, an open house with refreshments was provided by the Historical Society of Smithfield at its building on Main Street. The event was hosted by Judie Phillippi, president.

Major donors who contributed to the marker fund are Helen Straus, Richard and Pam McElroy, John and Martha Domenick, Phillip Allen, Carol Denequolo and Renee Garcia. Thank you - your generosity helped quicken the date of the dedication.

Appreciation goes to Tony Phillippi, John Borkowski and Frank Kovach for a job well done placing the marker.

Proclamations were received by the Friends of Smithfield CDC from U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and state Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville. A citation was presented at the dedication by Nelson.

More than 80 people were in attendance, including members of the Jefferson County Historical Society, Fire Chief Nathan Ford and several members of the fire department and Casey Robinson, representing the police department.

Program committee members Evelyn Clouston, Linda Kovach and I want to thank all of those who made this event possible.
