WMC Auxiliary applauds volunteers

The Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary held its appreciation dinner Tuesday, gathering in the hospital's recently, where the organization recognized Marg DiClemente as its volunteer of the year.

DiClemente has volunteered with the auxiliary since the early 1970s, working throughout the hospital, including 22 years with the gift cart.

She served as the auxiliary president from 1978 to 1979 and for the last 25 years has been working on the skilled care floor.

"It has been a joy and a privilege for me to serve as a volunteer," DiClemente said.

DiClemente is known to sing for individual patients as well as leading sing-a-longs during floor activities.

The auxiliary also recognized many of its volunteers for their hours of service in the past year and awarded $6,000 in scholarships to four local high school students.

Among those recognized for their volunteer service were: Barbara Andrews, 150 hours; Jean Irvin, 150 hours; Margurite Strobel, 150 hours; Pride Grimm, 500 hours; Norma Jean Boni, 500 hours; Patrick Gurrera, 1,000 hours; Vivian Weigel, 1,000 hours; Louise Herman, 2,000 hours; Mel Vorhees, 2,000 hours; Paula Billick, 3,000 hours; Diana Crago, 6,000 hours; Alma Wansack, 8,000 hours; Marg DiClemente, 10,000 hours; Elda Weekley, 11,000 hours; Sondra Weigel, 13,000 hours; Flo Jonczak, 14,000 hours; Jeannie Duffy, 15,000 hours; and Margaret Porchiran, 16,000 hours.

Weirton Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Charles M. O'Brien Jr. thanked all those who volunteer their time to help the hospital, saying the number of volunteer hours from the organization was "truly incredible."

"You add those special touches," he told the auxiliary members.

During the evening, the auxiliary presented its annual gift of $50,000 to hospital officials. This year's contribution will help with the purchase of a new patient tray system for the food service.

The presentation was made to O'Brien; WMC Board of Trustees Chair James Shockley and R&V Associates Managing Partner Vince DeLuzio by Auxiliary President Sondra Weigel and Treasurer Paula Billick.

Four of the auxiliary's Volunteens were awarded scholarships, dividing $6,000 provided for the year.

The auxiliary also approved the slate of new officers for the next two years, selecting Sondra Weigel as president; Jeannie Duffy as president-elect; Barbara Cameron as vice president; Elda Weekley as recording secretary; Mary Lou Batacho as corresponding secretary and Paula Billick as treasurer.
