Auxiliary launching

membership drive

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 45 of Follansbee is launching a membership drive at its Aug. 8 meeting with a DVD presentation to showcase what the auxiliary is and what it does for veterans.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the American Legion Hall in Follansbee.

Refreshments will be served along with a light luncheon.

Any woman interested in joining is urged to attend.

School of Nursing

graduation held

Trinity Health System School of Nursing held commencement exercises for the Class of 2012 on July 13 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.

Several graduates were recognized for excellence in academic and clinical achievements.

Rachel K. Corona of Mingo Junction received the Dr. Dominic A. Brancazio Memorial Award for highest academic achievement.

Anna M. Barnes of Toronto received the THS Medical Staff Award for second highest academic achievement.

Andrea S. Anderson of Mount Pleasant received the THS Auxiliary Award for third highest academic achievement.

The Patrick H. Macedonia, MD Excellence in Maternal-Newborn Nursing Award was presented to Corona.

The Nancy Bright MD Excellence in Pediatrics Award was presented to Jeanna Bracken of Jewett.

The Dr. Carmel Esposito Community Leadership Award was presented to Sherry L. Miller of Richmond.

Adena reunion

set for Aug. 18

The Adena Alumni Committee is planning the 31st-annual reunion for Aug. 18 at the Hopedale Social Hall.

Social time begins at 5 p.m. until dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. Reservations are to be made by Wednesday.

One of the committee's projects is placing a large stone with a picture of the high school and the Adena High School alma mater printed on it. The stone is erected at the old high school lawn and will be dedicated the day of the reunion at 2 p.m. The committee's other project is to have a list of all who attended the high school. The list will be on display at the Adena High School room in the old grade school building.

Additionally, the committee is working on an honors program. Anyone wanting to submit a nomination can contact any committee member.

meet Saturday

The United Mine Workers of America No. 1304 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Capraros in Hopedale.

Hats women meet

Members of the Prima Donna Red Hats met at Eat 'n Park with Andrea Simpson as chairperson.

Sophie Sanders and Ann Thorne won prizes.

Camera club

lists winners

The Upper Ohio Valley Camera Club has announced the monthly competition winners for June.

The print winners for the topic of the month "Churches" were Barb Momyer, first place; Debra Snider, second place; and Andy Tindor, third place. Winners for the open category were Tindor, first place; Angela McClain, second place; and Christine Beltrame, third place. The special effects winners included McClain, first place; Sam Rees, second place; and Dave Rees, third place. The slide winners for the topic "Churches" were Jim Malloy; first place; Steve Whiting, second place; and Claudia Norris, third place. The open category winners included Norris, first place; Ruth Bovalina, second place; and Whiting, third place. The special effects winners were Norris, first place; Bovalina, second place; and Whiting, third place.

For the June workshop meeting, a "portrait-posing" photo shoot was held. Club members brought in friends and family members to be the models.

Club members who contributed lights and backdrops were Momyer, Snider and Becky Mikesell. Some of the pictures were taken outdoors. A model-posing workshop is held once a year as well as workshops to help members learn new things and to improve their photography.

Gables crowns

Residents at Gables Care Center in Hopedale were treated to a prom June 29, which was planned by activity director Lynnette White and staff.

More than 40 residents and family members participated in the dress-up event where special decorations included a mirror ball, punch fountain and periwinkle and white decor.

The highlight of the day was the crowning of the prom king, Laban Blackburn, and queen, Wilma Bonham, by Hopedale Mayor Dirk Harkins.

Prior to being entertained by the local group Vinyl Classics, each prom attendee had pictures taken at the gazebo in the courtyard by Lori Vinci.

Dancing to the oldies music was followed by a meal featuring lasagna, salad and dessert.

Friends of Madonna picnic approaches

The Friends of Madonna Picnic will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday at the Serbian Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek.

Entertainment will include: from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., George Hvizdak; 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Highly Improvable; 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Baq II Baq with Bill Holt; and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., disc jockey Jay Shepherd.

There will be a drawing at 9 p.m., and tickets will be available at the picnic.

Flag-burning

ceremony set

The Vietnam Veterans Support Group Chapter 1 will hold a flag-burning ceremony Saturday at the War Memorial Building located at 423 North St., Steubenville.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m. with hot dogs and drinks.

Commander Ron Westfall will welcome those attending. Jack Ernest, chaplain, will offer the invocation.

The program at 2 p.m. will feature speaker Jay Teacoauch. The flag-folding ceremony will involve Ernest and flag folders Steve Jasko and Hartzel Brady. Taps will be played.

The Vietnam Veterans Support Group flag-burning detail will be presented by Westfall. It illustrates the proper respect and disposal of the American flag.

Annual WHS

reunion Aug. 18

The annual Wintersville High School Reunion will be held Aug. 18 at Aladdin Land.

Those planning to attend should bring a covered dish to share and table service.

Lunch will be at noon.

Jewett VFD

plans dinner

The Jewett Volunteer Fire Department will host a baked steak and chicken dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 12.

The menu also includes vegetables, salad, bread, dessert and beverage.
