WELLSBURG - Brooke Hills Park will be offering area families a day of free activities in celebration of National Kids Day on Aug. 5.

The festivities will include the park's annual cardboard boat race, in which children and their parents, grandparents and other adult family members are challenged to create small vessels using cardboard and duct tape provided by the park's staff. Trophies and prizes will go to those whose crafts remain afloat the longest in the park's swimming pool.

Teams should arrive at noon to begin building their boats, said Janice McFadden, the park's manager. The race is set to start about 1 p.m.

McFadden said the day also will include the Duck Pluck contest, which involves drawing plastic ducks from the park's baby pool to determine winners of cash and other prizes donated by area businesses. Chances are $3 each or two for $5 and may be purchased that day or in advance at the park's clubhouse.

There also will be free refreshments and swimming at the pool following the cardboard boat race.

National Kids Day was created by KidsPeace, a nonprofit organization aimed at helping children to avoid neglect, trauma and crises, to encourage families to spend more time together.

McFadden said National Kids Day is just one of many ways area residents can enjoy some summer fun at the park.

The park's series of mud bogs will continue Aug. 12. The competition involves drivers of off-road vehicles attempting to drive through a pit of thick mud, and participants compete for cash and points.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with the event to start at 1 p.m. Admission is $5, with pit passes enabling attendees a closer look at the festivities available for an additional $5.

A night golf scramble also is set for Aug. 18, and two-player teams who register before Aug. 15 will pay $10 less than the $60 fee collected on that night. The cost includes dinner, and winners will receive cash and prizes donated by various businesses.

Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a shotgun start at 6:30 p.m. that night.

The park's pool and paddle boats are open from noon to 7 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. The miniature golf is only manned full-time during those hours, but weekday visitors who want to play there need only stop by the park's clubhouse to gain admission.

McFadden added there are recreational vehicle and primitive camping sites.

The park is on state Route 27, just 5 miles from state Route 2 in Wellsburg.
