Tickets on sale

for Una Serata

The Italian American Cultural Club will present its seventh-annual Una Serata on Aug. 3 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner beginning at 6 p.m.

Una Serata, which means "one Italian evening," involves children entertaining the audience with Italian songs and dancing. It is a celebration of the Italian heritage.

Mirella the Musician will be performing Italian favorites.

In addition to dinner and entertainment, there will be door prizes and drawings.

Tickets are $25 for adults; $10 for children age 5-12; and free for children under age 5. They are available by contacting Bill DiMarzio at (740) 264-4773.

Wells Township

seniors to meet

Wells Township will hold its monthly senior citizens meeting at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wells Township Community Center on Steuben Street, Brilliant.

The lunch menu will be hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and macaroni and potato salad.

Participants can bring a fruit of choice to add to watermelon for a fruit salad.

Eldurays at

Country Friends

Country Friends will host the Eldurays band Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 402 Old Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

Country Friends has events each Monday, Friday and Saturday at the Memorial Hall. The doors open at 6 p.m. each Saturday, and the dance starts at 7 p.m.

On Monday and Friday, the doors open at 4 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. Participants can bring a covered dish if they so desire for the meal that begins at 5 p.m.

Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christianity, friendship and brotherly love through music. All proceeds go to charity. For information call (304) 527-4253 or (304) 797-1270.

Winemakers picnic

set for Aug. 9

Thirty-two members of the Tri State Winemakers Club and four guests gathered at the Elks Club in Wellsburg for their July meeting.

Derek Sliday and Christina Baumgartner hosted the event, serving authentic Greek dishes.

Ron Stimpak presided, welcoming guests George and Stella Parikakis and Rick and Bonnie Byers. Treasurer Linda Cole and secretary Patti Stimpak gave reports. Robbie France reported on cards sent.

Gino Guglielmo thanked members for their participation at the Wine in the Woods wine tasting. Member Jen Marchese invited members to attend a fundraiser spaghetti dinner at the Victorian Hall in Weirton to support the Ohio Valley Autism Network benefiting Project Lifesaver.

Charlie Rangos announced the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is planning its wine tasting from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Hellenic Hall in Steubenville.

The wine discussion was led by Derek Sliday who introduced Retsina, a Greek wine made from grapes and tree sap, and Ouzo, a distilled beverage with herbs and spices.

Jim Reed will host the annual club picnic at the Weirton Marina at 6 p.m. Aug. 9.

Gadabouts hold annual picnic

John and Betty Zak served as hosts and directed committee functions for the Gadabouts annual covered-dish picnic held July 17 at the Follansbee Community House.

The picnic committee consisted of Paul and Gloria Tripodi, Jenny Avoli, Margaret Frederick, Rich and Bev Wyman, Claudia Clevenger, Frank and Carol Wisnieski, Ray and Jean Dalfonso, Okie Nestor, Ron Fallert, Jane Barney, Ed Treglia, Ron and Patty Stimpak, Edna Michetti, Regina Truax, Barbara Purks, Nick Smarrella, Mike DiBiasi, Joyce Dobbs and Marge Serafini.

Claudia Clevenger opened the event with prayer. Ron Fallert and Jenny Avoli conducted the 50/50 drawing which was won by Claudia Clevenger.

Mike DiBiasi, assisted by Betty Zak, called bingo. Winners were Edna Michetti, Barbara Cerra, Gloria Tripodi, Ron Fallert, Jane Barney, Estella Treglia, Jennie Avoli, Virginia McMenamin, Edith Cooper and Nial M. Pashke. The cover all was won by Avoli and McMenamin.

Extreme heat resulted in the bocci tournament's cancellation.

Ron Stimpak and Ed Treglia directed an indoor corn toss tournament consisting of four players per team. First-place winners were George Glikes, Janet Haverfield, Paul Tripodi and Marilyn Altobell. Second-place winners were Ron Stimpak, Pat Stimpak, Bob Rawlings and Mary Alice Meyers. Several groups played cards.

Italian Festival

to present award

The scholarship committee of the Italian Festival Foundation will present awards to the 2012 Italian Festival scholarship winners at 7 p.m. Saturday on the Heritage Port stage in Wheeling during the 30th-annual Italian Festival.

The presentation will take place prior to the Ray Massa and the EuroRhythms show.

The scholarship winners will be introduced by Anthony D'Ulisse, scholarship chairman and former board president. Scholarship committee members from each county will present each winner with a commemorative scholarship plaque.

In April, the foundation announced this year's 14 scholarship winners from six surrounding counties - Belmont, Jefferson, Hancock, Brooke, Ohio and Marshall. The recipients were recognized in May at a special media reception at West Virginia Northern Community College.

Local foundation scholarship winners are:

Casey Wiltshire and Bethany Tinstman, both Buckeye Local High School; Kaylee LaPosta, Weir High School; Megan Salatino and Joshua Marosi, both Brooke High School; Michael Mastromichalis, Weir High School; Jennifer Ferguson, Oak Glen High School; and Nicole Cheek, West Virginia Northern Community College.

Evaluating the applicants' academic achievements, community service and economic need, the foundation awards annual scholarships to area college students without regard to their ethnic or racial roots. The Michael Sinicropi Award, named for the deceased festival chairman and longtime Hancock County board member, is presented to a local undergraduate who is pursuing a broadcast journalism degree. The foundation also awards a scholarship to a current outstanding culinary arts student at West Virginia Northern Community College.

The foundation has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships since its inception.

Retirees collect

for Hounds' Haven

Twenty retirees of the Steubenville City Schools system gathered for lunch July 12 at the Farm in Mount Pleasant.

Pet items and monetary donations were collected for Hounds' Haven. A thank-you letter was received from Urban Mission Ministries for June donations.

Cards were circulated and signed for ill members.

August's get-together will be supper at Shrock's Country Cookin in Sugarcreek at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 9. Reservations and payment are due. Those planning to attend are to contact Linda Holub.

Arthritis topic

at workshop

The Harrison Community Hospital will hold a workshop on physical activity to prevent and treat arthritis at the monthly diabetes workshop at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 in the hospital cafeteria.

Mary Bird, Arthritis Foundation Great Lakes Region program manager, will be the featured speaker.

Participants will learn easy-to-do exercises and stretching routines and are asked to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

5K Pink Ribbon Run/Walk Aug. 18

The American Cancer Society's second-annual 5K Pink Ribbon Run/Walk will be held Aug. 18 at Historic Fort Steuben at 120 S. Third St., Steubenville.

The event is a 5K run/walk held to increase awareness of breast cancer prevention, early detection and survivorship.

Registration and check-in begin at 6:30 a.m.

A light breakfast will be provided by Froehlich's Classic Corner.

The opening ceremony starts at 7:30 a.m.; the walkers will start at 7:45 a.m.; and the runners will be off at 8 a.m.

Water and hot dogs will be served afterwards by Walgreens.

The first 100 pre-registrants receive a free T-shirt. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female 5K runners in each age group with awards given to the top three male and female 5K walkers. There also will be door prizes and drawings.
