The 10th-annual Piney Fork Tribute at the Smithfield Township Park was held Sunday with tribute paid to the coal miners who worked in the No. 1 and 2 mines operated by Hanna Coal Co. Raymond “Buddy” Garcia, left, and Joe Rudik looked at the wall of photos that are displayed each year by Ann Marie Krulcik Grazyar, whose father was a miner. Henry Arrett of Bumpass, Va., was recognized as the oldest miner in attendance at age 94. Rudik’s dad, John, was a coal miner for 50 years, and his brother, John Jr., was in the mining profession. Garcia’s dad was the owner and operator of Manuel’s, a restaurant and bar in Piney Fork that was a popular place for the miners to relax. -- Esther McCoy
