Many help community shine

The Herald-Star

To the editor:

As members of the Steubenville Visitor Center, Jerry Barilla, president of Historic Fort Steuben, and I want to take a moment to thank all the organizations, individuals and businesses who have been working to provide wonderful events this summer. Although we were personally involved in only a few of them, we could see the impact the festivals, concerts and special programs had on tourism as well as hear the positive feedback from local residents who stopped by the visitor center.

The summer calendar began with the opening of the Fort Steuben Concert Series and then flowed into the Greek Food Festival, the Dean Martin Festival, Steubenville's Hometown Celebration, the Downtown Arts Festival, Ohio Valley Frontier Days, Union Cemetery Tour, the Stars and Stripes Concert and Festival with glorious fireworks (delayed due to bad weather), the Army Field Band Volunteers Concert and the spectacular Carson & Barnes Circus benefit for the Grand Theater. The excitement continues this weekend with a performance of "Les Miserables" at Steubenville High School and a block party at the Pleasant Hill School House, and then goes on with the African-American Heritage Festival (Aug. 3-5), the Jefferson County Fair (Aug. 14-19) and the Downtown ACS 5K Walk/Run (Aug. 18.)

Add to that the various church events and fundraisers and the weekly farmers' markets (Wednesday at Eastern Gateway Community College and Thursday downtown.) While attending some of these activities you probably noticed the beautiful planters and hanging baskets that have added color and greenery to the downtown and are flourishing even in the dreadful heat thanks to the volunteers from Vapor Jet who water them every day.

So thank you, thank you, thank you to all those who ensured that our community would have a great summer in spite of the financial problems and employment woes that have been our lot for the past few years. If we missed anyone, please forgive us there are so many who worked together to bring this all to pass. Be sure to thank representatives from:
