WINTERSVILLE - A Cupcake Wars Contest will be sponsored for the second year by the Jefferson County Farm Bureau promotion and education committee. The first year of competition had an ice cream flavor contest.

The theme for the contest is "How Did That Get in My Lunchbox?" It is based on the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation award winning book of the same name.

The contest will be held Aug. 16 during the fair, and the entry deadline is Aug. 1. Mary Ellen Grafton has announced the following rules to participate in the contest:

There will be no more than three members per team, with at least one team member from a Farm Bureau family. The contest will be limited to the first six teams who contact the Farm Bureau office at 734 Main St., Wintersville. Applications can be e-mailed to jcfarmbureau@att.net or mailed to the Main Street address.

The contest is open for any child between the seventh and 12th grades.

A minimum of 24 cupcakes, with a maximum of 48, are allowed. They can be regular or bite-size.

Cupcakes can be baked from a cake mix or from an original recipe. For the competition, three copies of the recipe are needed, including the frosting recipe for the judges.

Cupcake recipes must include the ingredient of an item that would be found in a lunch box, with the example of apples, carrots, peanut butter.

Cupcakes are to be baked ahead of time at home but frosted and arranged at the fairgrounds.

Cupcakes are to be arranged in the shape of a lunchbox, with items found in a nutritious lunch. Reference can be made to the OFBF book on lunch boxes for ideas. The book also can be purchased for $10 or reviewed for ideas at the Farm Bureau office. The design needs to be arranged on a 19-by-26-inch cupcake board that will be provided by the Farm Bureau and can be picked up at the county office when the team registers for the competition.

The team must have three additional cupcakes set aside for judging.

Participants will be judged on the cleanliness and sanitation of their work area, as well as on taste and texture of the cupcake and frosting.

Participants need to provide their own coolers for any necessary refrigeration.

Entry forms may be picked up at the Farm Bureau office or call (740) 266-6603 for an electronic copy.
