Diabetes workshop

at area hospital

Harrison Community Hospital's monthly diabetes workshop at 6:30 p.m. July 5 in the hospital's cafeteria will feature pharmacist Jason Backel, owner of Custer Pharmacy, discussing the 340B prescription discount program available to the community.

The 340B prescription discount program, a result of legislation enacted by Congress to address the high costs of pharmaceuticals, requires pharmaceutical manufacturers participating in the Medicaid program to provide discounts on covered outpatient drugs purchased by specified government-supported facilities ("covered entities") that serve the nation's most vulnerable patient populations.

Even though this is tied to the government's Medicaid program, patients do not have to be on Medicaid to be eligible, a spokesman said. As a critical access hospital, Harrison Community Hospital is a covered entity under the program.

During his presentation, Backel will discuss the qualifying guidelines. Any patient - Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance or self-pay - might be able to participate.

The monthly diabetes workshops are designed to help people understand the disease and learn to manage it. The free educational sessions are held the first Thursday of each month and feature physicians, dieticians and other healthcare professionals covering a variety of topics, including healthy eating, monitoring blood sugar levels, taking medications and problem solving.

Reservations are not required. Light refreshments will be served. Transportation is available through the Harrison County Rural Transit by calling (740) 942-1369.
