STEUBENVILLE - Jefferson County Coroner Dr. Michael Scarpone has requested an autopsy be performed on the body Skyler Ellenberger.
The 5-year-old girl's body was discovered Thursday evening in a second-floor bedroom following a fire that partially destroyed a home at 362 Terrace Ave.
Debbie Welsch, a spokesperson for the coroner's office, said the body has been transported to Cuyahoga County for the autopsy.
"The coroner just wants to make sure her death is a result of the fire," said Welsch.
Stephanie Sharlowe, a spokesperson for the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office, said investigators returned to the scene of the fire Friday morning.
"They have reported the fire is of an undetermined nature. It has not been ruled suspicious and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the fire is encouraged to contact our office at (800) 589-2728. Any information might be significant," said Sharlowe
City firefighters were called to the blaze at 5:40 p.m. Thursday and quickly extinguished the flames.
The fire department reported the bedroom where the girl's body was found had the most extensive fire damage.
An investigator from the fire marshal's office and the city fire department inspector did a preliminary investigation Thursday evening.
The Thursday fire was the third fatal fire this year in the city.
The Weirton Fire Department provided assistance at the scene, and Wintersville Fire and Rescue stood by at a city fire station.
