NEW SOMERSET - A patriotic theme was used for the Ladies Night dinner hosted by the Jefferson Ruritan Club at the New Somerset Church.

Don Clarke gave the welcome, and Charles Campbell led the group in singing.

Robert "Bud" Hyndman, zone governor, and his wife, Joann Hyndman, assistant zone governor, were guests, with the governor giving a state report on the Ruritans.

Shawn Wilson, Edison High School senior, was presented the annual Jefferson Ruritan scholarship by Clarke. Placing in the top 15 percent of his graduating class, he will be attending Youngstown State University to major in music and theater.

His father, Stan Wilson, a past Stanton Ruritan member, accompanied his son to the dinner. Other guests were Ann and Bill Bray, Emma and Megan Scott and Ruby Haught.

Robert Myers served on the scholarship committee.

Esther McCoy, Herald-Star staff reporter, was the guest speaker who shared stories related to assignments and about her role as the food editor, which has meant having her husband, Lamont, wait for his dinner while she took pictures of the food for her column.

She read a story written by Summer Wallace-Minger, The Weirton Daily Times' community editor, calling her the "fair queen" and finished with a recipe for a happy marriage.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. July 11. A covered-dish picnic will be held at Austin Lake on Aug. 1 at 6 p.m.
