WELLSBURG - More than $4 million in scholarships were awarded to graduating Brooke High School seniors during the school's annual scholarship awards night, May 17.

The scholarships included $88,825 donated by various individuals, businesses and groups through the efforts of the Brooke County Schools Education Foundation; $43,750 from the Albert A. Christ Foundation, and $180,500 in West Virginia's Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence (P.R.O.M.I.S.E.) scholarships as well as many scholarships from colleges, universities and other sources.

Offered as an incentive to keep the state's high school graduates in West Virginia, the state-funded P.R.O.M.I.S.E. scholarships provide $4,750 per year for tuition at public colleges and universities in the state to students who maintain a 3.0 grade point average or better.

The scholarships have been awarded to the following students thus far: Maxwell Allemond, Lacey Baker, Samantha Bardy, Christa Bland, Mackenzie Boyd, Ciara Chiodo, Tyler Cooper, Alexis Cutshall, Jessica Fowler, Brian Gialluco, Carly Gima, Raeann Hanlon, Nathan Harper, Joshua Harrick, James Horner, Casey Johnson, Franko Lewis, Laura Littell, Caitlin Luck, Dakota Marker, Joshua Marosi, Amiee Michael, Vanessa Michetti, Kathleen O'Connell, John Phillips, Vincenzo Pizzuti, Rachel Richard, Kevin Rowland, Alec Salakovich, Emily Sloat, Dana Snyder, Thomas VanCamp, Halle Virgin, Wendy Wells, Kelsey Welsh, Jake Westling, Joshua Yost and Kaitlyn Yost.

Toni Shute, the school's principal, announced students will receive 57 scholarships, ranging from $250 to $1,500, from the Albert A. Christ Foundation. The Wheeling-based foundation has provided millions of dollars in scholarships to high school graduates in several counties along the Ohio River.

This year's Brooke High School recipients are: Max Allemond, Lacey Baker, Samantha Bardy, Christa Bland, Mackenzie Boyd, Ciara Chiodo, Tyler Cooper, Alexis Cutshall, Jessica Fowler, Brian Gialluco, Carly Gima, Raeann Hanlon, Nathan Harper, Josh Harrick, James Horner, Casey Johnson, Franko Lewis, Laura Littell, Caitlin Luck, Dakota Marker, Josh Marosi, Amiee Michael, Vanessa Michetti, Katie O'Connell, John Phillips, Vincenzo Pizzuti, Rachel Richard, Kevin Rowland, Alec Salakovich, Emily Sloat, Dana Snyder, Thomas VanCamp, Halle Virgin, Wendy Wells, Kelsey Welsh, Jake Westling, Joshua Yost, Kaitlyn Yost, Kelsey Bable, Mason Bates, Desiree Boley, Mia Cousar, Wesley Eaton, Ares Ensell, Hannah Everhart, Ali Gerrard, Steven Jeffries, Jessica Kennedy, Sheena Ossman, Nick Breen, Robert Browning, Jacob Byers, Kelsie Felton, Jacob Higgins, Jessica Kuna, Elizabeth Kyanko, Kelsey Miller, Shannon Reardon, Courtney Rine, Megan Salatino, Logan Tennant, Chelsea Thomas, Morgan Thomas, Alyssa Mitchem, Brent Pellen, Carly Schwertfeger and Ali Crawford.

Shute noted since the Brooke County Schools Education Foundation was formed 22 years ago, the group has generated $767,150 in scholarships for more than 4,500 Brooke High School seniors.

The scholarships have been funded by area businesses, civic groups and others, including members of its board of trustees, she said.

Among the many benefactors is Wheeling-Nisshin Inc., which this year awarded a total of $1,600 in scholarships, for $2,000 or $5,000, to the following students: Jake Chernik, Rachel Richard, Dana Snyder, Courtney Rine and Frank DeCapio.

Shute said many area residents have helped to perpetuate the memory of a former classmate, teacher, principal or other school official, or loved one by establishing scholarships in their names.

Three of the school's older memorial scholarships are the Roger Simpson Award, Richard Whitehead Award and Robert "Buzz" Rocchio Award,

The Roger Simpson Award is given each year to a student who has excelled in academics and athletics and is said to have earned the respect of the school's coaches, who select each year's recipient, and teammates.

It's named for Roger Simpson, a Follansbee High School baseball player who died in 1964 as a result of an accidental collision with another player during a game

Simpson's Boy Scout Explorers troop started the award and past recipients and family members have generated funds for a scholarship presented to its winner.

This year Brian Gialluco received the award and a $2,500 scholarship in Simpson's honor. He also was awarded an engineering scholarship from West Virginia University, the Teddi and Justin Licker Memorial Scholarship, named for a Weirton mother and son who were killed in an auto accident in 1988; and a scholarship from Russell Schwertfeger, a retired Brooke County teacher and coach.

Like Simpson, Gialluco participates in three sports, and he was awarded scholarships also from booster groups for the school's boys basketball, tennis and soccer teams.

Since 1999 the Richard M. Whitehead Award has been given to an outstanding female athlete and student in honor of the late Richard Whitehead, whose 36-year career in Brooke County Schools included serving as teacher, principal, superintendent and officiating at many track and field events.

This year's recipient is Ali Crawford, who also was awarded a $500 scholarship with the honor as well as three scholarships to West Virginia Wesleyan College, the William "Catfish" Hurst Memorial Scholarship, Doris Bird Memorial Scholarship and scholarships from the Wellsburg Lions Club and the Brooke Track Boosters.

This year there were two recipients of the Robert "Buzz" Rocchio Award: Caitlin Luck and Tyler Cooper.

Cooper also was awarded scholarships from West Virginia University and Reasners of Wellsburg. Luck was awarded a scholarship from Slippery Rock University.

The award is named for a Brooke High School band and choir member who died in an automobile accident in 1971. Rocchio, who was named to both All-State Choir and All-State Band, was known as an accomplished musician and a friend to many.

Recipients of the award, which included a $500 scholarship for each recipient this year, are chosen for having similar qualities.

Shute also presented to Nicole McKensie the Principal's Award, which is given to a student who displays outstanding school pride in addition to being involved in academics and extracurricular activities. It included a $1,500 scholarship for McKensie, who plans to enter college after serving in the Army.

Shute said McKensie assumed the role of the school's mascot, the Bruin bear, with enthusiasm at many sports events throughout the year and even in oppressive heat, refused to remove the bear's head because she felt it would disappoint children attending.
