WINTERSVILLE - The Indian Creek High School Class of 2012 will hold commencement ceremonies at 7 p.m. today at the Franciscan University of Steubenville Finnegan Fieldhouse.
One valedictorian and salutatorian lead the class, with eight students completing the top 10.
The valedictorian is Aubrie Gaydosh, and the salutatorian is Samuel Orr. Other top 10 students are Ashley Starr, McCall Sims, Megan Hukill, Joshua Gluzman, Danielle Welling, Tabatha Taylor, Alisha Keeton and Hunter Bailey.
Gaydosh is the daughter of Steve and Amy Gaydosh of Mingo Junction. She was a member of Key Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions for four years and treasurer of the National Honor Society for two years. She was on the volleyball team her freshman and sophomore years and played Club Gold Volleyball her freshman year. She participated in the Envirothon for the past two years serving as team captain her senior year. She has been a volunteer at Weirton Medical Center for the past four years. She also volunteered for the Indian Creek S.T.A.R.T. program and the Urban Mission. She is a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Mingo Junction. She received the American Legion Americanism Award, the All-Conference Academic Award, President's Award of Educational Excellence, DAR Good Citizenship Award, State Award of Merit, President's Award of Excellence, U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Award, Kristen Robinson-Johnson Memorial Scholarship, an Indian Creek Foundation Scholarship and Clancey Family Scholarship. She also received the Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship. She is a Gold Key Scholar and has received a four-year academic letter. She has been selected into the honors program at Duquesne University and received the Duquesne University Academic Scholarship. She plans to earn a doctorate of pharmacy at Duquesne.
Orr is the son of Doug and Kim Orr of Wintersville. He is an Indian Creek Gold Key Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and has been selected for participation in the 2011 Eastern Gateway Community College Youth Leadership Program. He was a member of the baseball team for four years earning three varsity letters and was named first-team Buckeye Eight catcher, All-Eastern District Division I and II, and second Team All-State Division Two catcher. He was recognized as the Wendy's High School Heisman Award winner. He also received an Ohio Valley Athletic Conference All-Conference Academic Award. He plans to major in civil engineering technology at Fairmont State University. He received the State Award of Merit, OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award, "I Dare You" Award, U.S. Marine Corps Academic Award, Kristen Robinson-Johnson Scholarship, a Pugliese Scholarship, Clancey Family Scholarship, Mathematics Department Award and Spanish Award .
Starr is the daughter of Tom and Lisa Starr of Bloomingdale. She was a member of the Key Club and SADD and served as vice president for the National Honor Society and editor in chief of the school's newspaper. During her senior year, she was a member of the homecoming court. She also is a Gold Key scholar and earned four academic letters for her work outside of the classroom. Along with being a member of the basketball team during her freshman and sophomore years, she earned a varsity letter in softball all four years. She won numerous awards, including First-Team Eastern District in 2010 and 2011, Second-Team All-State her sophomore year and OVAC Player of the Year consecutively in 2010 and 2011. She led her team to a runner-up OVAC position this year. She volunteers at the Urban Mission and is a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. She plans to continue her softball career with a scholarship to Walsh University where she plans to major in computer science with a minor in business. She received the OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award, Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award, Wendy's High School Heisman Award, State Award of Merit, U.S. Marine Corps Athletic Award, Pugliese Scholarship and an Indian Creek Foundation Scholarship.
Sims is the daughter of Denny and Kristie Sims of Unionport. She was a member of the Key Club and SADD for four years, was chosen as the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership representative her sophomore year and served as the curriculum improvement council representative her junior and senior years. She also served numerous leadership positions being co-president of National Honor Society, class vice president for three years and president of student council her senior year. She is a four-year member of the volleyball team, lettering two years and serving as co-captain her senior year and a four-year member of the ICHS band, lettering three years and being squad and section leader. She earned four academic letters for volunteer work at the Urban Mission and in the community. She was prom committee leader her junior year and served on the yearbook staff and as school newspaper editor her senior year. She was chosen as a member of the 2011 homecoming court and is a bronze, silver, and gold key recipient. She received the Arion Award for scholastic and musical achievement, the Steubenville Rotary Club "Service Above Self" scholarship and the ICEA scholarship. She is a member of the Christian Church of Unionport. She has been accepted into the Honors College at Kent State University where she received a Trustee scholarship. She also received the President's Academic Award, Glenda Dunlope Scholarship, Indian Creek Key Club Scholarship, Student Council Scholarship, Unionport/Wayne Township Scholarship and Wintersville Alumni Scholarship. She plans to major in public health with a concentration in pre-medicine.
Hukill is the daughter of Philip and Barbara Hukill of Wintersville. She is a gold key scholar. She has been involved in Key Club for four years, having served as senior representative for the 2011-12 school year. She earned three academic letters for her community service and volunteer work. She is a member of Wintersville United Methodist Church. She was chosen to be a part of the 2011 Eastern Gateway Community College Youth Leadership Program during her junior year. She is a two-year member of National Honor Society and an active member of ICHS Productions for the past four years, serving as editor-in-chief of the Indian Creek winter sport programs and also as copy editor on the yearbook staff. She participated in basketball for four years, serving as co-captain of the the team her senior year, and earning two varsity letters in her junior and senior years. She was awarded three OVAC All-Conference Academic Awards for the years 2009-12 and also received the silver and gold scholarship certificates from the Ohio Basketball Coaches Association. She received the State Award of Merit, "I Dare You" Award, Principal's Leadership Award, Helen Barkhurst Scholarship and Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship as well as the Interactive Media Award. She plans to major in early childhood education.
Gluzman is the son of Raphael and Tina Gluzman of Steubenville. He is a member of Key Club for two years and secretary of Key Club during his senior year. He was a member for SADD for one year and represented Indian Creek in the 2012 Envirothon. He participated in the high school play his junior year and is a gold key scholar. He won the state Award of Merit, Steubenville Kiwanis Award and Science Department Award. He plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh and major in engineering.
Welling is the daughter of Mark and Darlene Welling. She is a gold key scholar, a two-year member of the National Honor Society and received three academic letters. She has been a member of the Indian Creek Marching Band for four years, serving as a squad leader for three years and as a senior she was the clarinet section leader. At solo and ensemble, she received a superior award. She also participated in the concert band and pep band. She also has been a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years, serving as secretary her junior year and vice president her senior year. She participated in the school's musical productions and the French Christmas Carolers for three years. She is a member of Kolmont Community Church, where she is vice president of her youth group. She received Americanism and Citizenship Awards from the American Legion and a Daughters of the American Revolution Award for excellence in American history. She has been awarded the McClellan Trust Fund Scholarship from EGCC, where she plans to earn her associate of arts degree and then transfer to a four-year college. She has also received the State Award of Merit, President's Award of Excellence, Hills Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization Scholarship and EGCC Jefferson County Academic Scholarship.
Taylor is the daughter of Terry Taylor of Steubenville and Tim Taylor of Toronto. She has been involved in Key Club for four years and SADD for three years. She also was a member of the Indian Creek High School Pep Band for two years, concert band for three years and marching band for four years, serving as a squad leader her senior year. She marched in the Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and at a Pittsburgh Steelers' game in 2010. She received three academic letters for grades and dedication to volunteer service as well as an academic certificate. She is a bronze key recipient. She received the Trustee Scholarship from KSU, where she plans to attend majoring in early childhood education. She has also received the Albert B. Teramana Memorial Scholarship and an Indian Creek Key Club Scholarship.
Keeton is the daughter of Darrell and JoAnn Keeton of Wintersville. She has been a member of Key Club for four years, serving as vice president her senior year, SADD for one year and Fellowship of Christian Athletes for one year. She also was involved in the school drama club for three years, holding key roles in plays. She has done volunteer work for Trinity Health System for four years and volunteered as an Upward basketball coach and concession worker for three years. She received a gold key for maintaining a high GPA and three academic letters for GPA and community service. She has been selected for the summer engineering program at Ohio State University. She plans to arrive at OSU early through the "Women in Engineering" Leap Program at the main campus and plans to major in biomedical engineering. She also received the state Award of Merit and the President's Award of Excellence.
Bailey is the daughter of Mark Bailey and the late Bonnie Bailey. She is a gold key scholar, a two-year member of National Honor Society, serving her senior year as secretary, and received three academic letters. She participated in marching band for four years, lettering three years, serving as a squad leader of three years and section leader for one year. She was in concert band for three years, sitting first chair her junior year, and jazz band for two years, sitting first chair her senior year. She also was a member of the pep band for two years. She helped in the elementary school plays for two years and the high school play for one year. She played tennis for two years, lettering both years. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and participates in her ward. She received a Young Women Recognition Award for completing a minimum of 48 assignments and eight, 10-hour projects. She is enrolled in gospel seminary, completing her fourth year. She also attended a youth camp for five years, serving as a youth counselor for two of those years. She plans to attend Brigham Young University to major in mechanical engineering. She received the President's Award of Excellence, Wintersville Elementary School PTO Scholarship and the Judy Custer Memorial Scholarship.
