Event center a plus for our area

May 16, 2012
The Herald-Star

On Thursday, the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau unveiled the Weirton Event Center, and we are sure this new facility will become a mainstay of community activity for years to come.

While the center has only been in the works the last couple of years, the history of work at the site can be traced back to 2005 with the East Street extension project, through to the demolition of Cove Elementary School and much debate among a variety of residents and officials alike.

The center, located in the heart of downtown Weirton, provides a venue for a variety of entertainment and activities for pretty much everyone.

With a full concert series beginning May 25, including performances from groups and singers like Legend, Brett Cain, the Joseph Sisters, Radio Tokyo, Key West Express, US Kids and No Bad JuJu, there is certain to be something for just about everyone's musical tastes.

There also will be weekly flea markets and farmers' markets beginning later this year to help showcase the crafts and of our region.

And thanks to several area sponsors, Fridays at Five, is free to the public. These sponsors, the Hancock County Commission, Business Development Corp., FirstEnergy, Hancock County Savings Bank, Chesapeake Energy, Christian Fellowship Foundation, Project BEST, Dee-Jay's, Frontier Communication, Renaissance Weirton, Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Starvaggi Charities, DiBacco Properties, Mario's, LBRA Architecture, Gus's Goodies, Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Starvaggi and H.E. Newman Co. deserve a great deal of appreciation.

Of course, we can't forget to thank the Top of West Virginia CVB and everyone else involved in getting this project moving to begin with.

The Weirton Event Center is a true example of what can be accomplished with teamwork and an aim to do something positive for all area residents.
