Crusaders win again

STEUBENVILLE - The Catholic Central baseball team defeated Martins Ferry, 14-4, Wednesday at Vaccaro Field. The Crusaders (19-5) scored 40 runs in their three wins this week.

Central's Aleks Porreca blistered three singles to lead the 12-hit attack. B.J. Grandinetti added a pair of singles and Adam Lyons a single and double.

The Crusaders broke open a 5-4 game with three in the fifth inning and ended the game with six in the sixth.

Chris Murphy earned the win.

They take on Beallsville at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Bridgeport in the Division IV sectional tournament.

Brooke loses to Linsly

WELLSBURG - The Linsly baseball team had a 6-0 lead after three innings Wednesday and went on to beat host Brooke, 11-4.

The Bruins (13-14) host Oak Glen at 5:30 p.m. today for Senior Night.

Steven Jeffries homered for Brooke. Paul DiPasquale singled for an RBI, Nick Breen added two singles and David Hardesty doubled.

Creek falls to Big Reds

BELLAIRE - The Indian Creek softball team dropped a 4-3 decision at Bellaire Wednesday. The Redskins are 17-7 and will play next at 5 p.m. Monday at Jefferson Lake State Park in the Division II sectional tournament against the winner of Saturday's 1 p.m. game between Steubenville and Beaver Local.

Paige DeMattio collected two singles and two RBIs for the Redskins. Brey Mays added a single and double and Ashley Starr a single and RBI.

Dons split a doubleheader

MORGANTOWN?- The Madonna baseball team split a doubleheader with host Morgantown Wednesday, losing 8-4 and winning 7-5.

Logan Linder took the loss. He fanned one in four innings. But, he was big at the plate with two singles, a double and a home run for two RBIs. Will Bowser tripled and Nick Battista singled for an RBI.

The Blue Dons had 11 hits in the win with Linder continuing his hot streak with two singles and a home run for two RBIs. Connor Mogan added a single and double for three RBIs. Battista had two singles and an RBI, Bowser a triple and Ross Comis two singles.

After splitting a doubleheader at Hebron Lakewood, Madonna is 16-9 and takes on Weir High at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bowman Field for the city championship.

Potters beat Big Red

STEUBENVILLE - The East Liverpool tennis team defeated host Steubenville Big Red, 5-0, Wednesday at Belleview Park.

In singles play, Craig Miller defeated Aaron Botegal 6-0, 6-3; Nick Harris beat Harold Malone 6-1, 6-0 and Joey Bickerton downed Josh Fordham 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles action, Alex Hoeffler and Nick DiLoreto nipped Michael Nodianos and Michael Petrides 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 (10-8 super tie breaker) and Andrew Hutchman and Derek Munoz beat Hannah Meyer and Tyler Casto 6-2, 6-4.

Big Red competes in the Eastern District sectional tournament at 9 a.m. Monday at Dover High.

Bears hoop boosters to meet

NEW MANCHESTER - The Oak Glen Boys Basketball Boosters will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday in the multipurpose room at the high school. New head basketball coach Dave Smith and his staff will be introduced.

All parents and players in going into grades 9-12 who plan to be a part of the program are urged to attend.

McFarland records an ace

CHESTER - Joe McFarland made a hole-in-one at Mountaineer Woodview Golf Course. He used a 5-iron on the 160-yard par 3 eighth hole.

The witnesses were Ray Case, Dick Pannett and Dick Ralston.

Chiefs to hold registration

STEUBENVILLE - The Mingo/Indian Creek Chiefs will hold registration for players ages 7-12 (and 13 if child does not turn 14 before Nov. 7) from noon to 3 p.m. May 12 at Hibbett Sports in the Fort Steuben Mall.

Cost is $65 and please bring copy of birth certificate for age confirmation and team placement.
