City man sentenced for heroin possession

STEUBENVILLE -Drake Burton, 19, of Steubenville was sentenced to six months in the Eastern Ohio Correction Center on Monday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge David Henderson after pleading guilty to possession of heroin.

Burton was arrested by the Jefferson County Drug Task Force after a confidential informant purchased heroin from him in October.

County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said Burton was convicted as a juvenile of carrying a concealed weapon and tampering with evidence and spent time in a state juvenile detention center.

Defense attorney Lydia Spragin asked Henderson to put Burton on probation because he had spent 178 days in the county jail. The judge noted Burton had asked for a delay in his trial.

Burton will be on probation for two years after his release from the Eastern Ohio Correction Center. He faces up to 18 month in prison if he violates probation.
