STEUBENVILLE - The Piney Fork post office ceased operations Friday and post office box services have been moved to the Smithfield post office.
Piney Fork Postmaster Donna Nidel declined comment and referred all questions to the Cleveland postal services office.
David Van Allen, communications officer for the U.S. Postal Service in Cleveland, said the post office was on "an emergency suspension" and he cited structural and health issues at its current location.
"At this point the post office box customers will be moved to the Smithfield post office. We do not see any major issues with the move and will continue offering the same services at the Smithfield office," said Van Allen.
"There will be no address changes for the Piney Fork post office customers," added Van Allen.
He said he did not know the details of the structural and health issues in the building.
"Those issues are under review starting Friday. It was something officials just became aware of in recent days and they are now dealing with it. The building issues are under review and are being studied. A final decision will be made after our review," he said.
Van Allen said he did not know how long the post office will be closed.
