WEIRTON - Inspectors from Weirton's code department discussed current cases with the Building Enforcement Agency and previewed some upcoming cases during Tuesday's meeting.
The BEA has been making headway when it comes to getting rid of dilapidated houses and commercial properties in need of demolition because of deterioration. With four cases still current, code inspectors discussed some of the results of the asbestos abatements and recommendation for the demolitions.
Code Inspector Bruce Lamp said asbestos was found at the property located at 136 Pikeview Road. He said it would take a few weeks before the abatement could take place and recommended carrying the case over into the next month.
Several other properties, however, had no trouble with asbestos. Lamp said the remaining current demolitions - 3535 Orchard St., 647 Cove Road and 3039 Main St. - should be carried over for the next month as well. He said Pulice Construction is ready to move on to the first two, but officials still are waiting to hear back from the West Virginia Historic Review Committee.
"We spoke with them already and they reminded us when their 30 days will be up," said Chief Code Official Rod Rosnick.
"They are going to take their 30 days, which will be up on (April) 23, but I don't think there is going to be a problem."
In addition, Rosnick said the demolition could get more expensive as it moves forward. Because the interior of the building is collapsing, an asbestos abatement cannot be done at this time, meaning it will have to be addressed along the way.
