tax receipts jump
STEUBENVILLE - Retail sales in Jefferson County increased 14 percent compared to the same period last year.
Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said retail sales for January totaled nearly $75.4 million, generating $1,130,949 in piggyback sales tax revenue. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for January 2011 generated $991,506, based on retail sales of $66.1 million.
January is usually the highest month reported for retail sales. County officials said the money collected in January was the largest amount in the past five years. Retail sales increased by 12 percent in December - $61.42 million - compared to December 2010.
Retail sales for 2011 averaged $55.94 million a month and $53.49 million in 2010.

trustees set meeting
BRILLIANT - The Wells Township trustees will meet in special session at 9 a.m. Monday at the township office at 409 Prospect St. to discuss personnel matters.
Council resolution
introduced
STEUBENVILLE - City Council introduced a resolution of commendation to recognize Jake Howarth, Greg Moray, Devin Brown, Charlie Keenan and Shawn McGhee, all wrestlers at Steubenville High School.
The resolution will be presented at Tuesday night's regular meeting.
