FUS drops doubleheader

STEUBENVILLE - In each game of the Franciscan University of Steubenville's softball home opening doubleheader, Oberlin's Emily King found a different way to be dominant. In the first game, a 9-0 Oberlin victory, King went 3-for-4 with three homeruns and four RBI, and in the second game, which Oberlin won 10-0, King was called to the mound and threw the first perfect game of her career.

Despite the dominant play of their opposition, the Lady Barons improved on the defensive side of the ball according to head coach Terry Leighty.

"Defensively, we were better than we were (at spring training) in Florida," Leighty said. "There were a couple balls today that should have been caught, and they weren't, but overall we were better and I am encouraged by that."

FUS?only managed two hits on the day - singles by freshmen Michelle Volk and Katrina Fabian.

"The kids were into the game, no one is giving up, and that is great. We're a young team. The kids keep fighting and I think eventually we are going to turn things around," he said.

The Lady Barons (0-8) are back in action on Thursday when they visit St. Vincent College.
