County piggyback

receipts increase

STEUBENVILLE - Retail sales in Jefferson County in December jumped 12 percent compared to the same period last year.

Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said retail sales for December totaled nearly $61.43 million, generating $921,386 in piggyback sales tax revenue. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for December 2010 generated $820,946, based on retail sales of $54.73 million.

Retail sales for 2011 averaged $55.94 million a month, compared to the monthly average of $53.49 million in 2010. Retail monthly sales in 2009 averaged $52.42 million and $58.03 million a month in 2008.

STEUBENVILLE - Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said Wednesday is the deadline to pay tax bills for the first half of 2011.

Persons who have not received a bill should contact the county treasurer's office at (740) 283-8572.

Credit card payments are only accepted by telephone at (800) 2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829) or online at and use jurisdiction code 4577. Agresta said Official Payments, the service provider, charges a convenience fee for the service.

Payments of cash or check only can be paid at the treasurer's office on the first floor of the courthouse or at the following banks: Huntington National Bank in Bergholz, Richmond, Wintersville, Toronto, Mingo Junction and Tiltonsville; Citizens Bank in Tiltonsville; and Peoples National in Mount Pleasant.

Health board

to meet Monday

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Board of Health will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Brooke County Courthouse.

New business will include the appointment of a chairman and vice chairman, reappointment of the health officer and review of fiscal policies and of progress in meeting new vaccination requirements for students.

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Republicans will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Brooke County Library at 10th and Main streets.

The public is welcome to attend, regardless of party affiliation. The group is planning a number of events and activities for this election year.
