The Herald-Star

The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary of Weirton held its monthly meeting Feb. 13 at the Serbian-American Cultural Center with President Joan Spano presiding.

Chaplain Mary Ann Smith led devotions.

Thank-you cards were read from Stacy E. Brown, Barboursville Veterans Home administrator, for Valentine cards, birthday cards and calendars sent to residents; Tri-State Medical Group for the group's outreach efforts; adopted veteran Duke Horstemeyer for gifts; former adopted veteran Gabe Arlia for gifts throughout the previous year; Rita Robinson for cards and phone calls; and Marine Club member Donald Toothman.

A report was given on cards that had been sent.

The group has begun working on Easter cards for active duty service personnel and veterans at area nursing homes. Members also will be sending the troops healthy snacks. Anyone wanting to donate can contact Joan Spano at (304) 748-3107. Items needed include trail mix, nuts, beef jerky, powdered drink mixes, pretzels, raisins, dried fruit, granola bars, Twizzlers and Life Savers. The group will be working with Boatsie's Boxes in Wheeling.

Joan Spano gave each member a packet including a roster, calendar, 13 flag folds, a photo of the adopted veteran, by-laws and a photo of herself and Gail "Boatsie" VanVranken with jelly beans collected in 2011.

Carol Lyons won the 50/50 drawing, donating it back to the club.

The auxiliary will hold its monthly luncheon on Thursday at noon at Naple's.

The auxiliary will hold a bag lunch in March, and the next meeting will be held March 12 at the Serbian American Cultural Center.
