Know what you’re voting on

February 19, 2012
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

If you have noticed a proliferation of signs in the Indian Creek colors of red and yellow (gold), you have observed that the signs are urging you to support Issue 6 when you go to the polls on March 6.

Issue 6 is the levy issue seeking the passage of 4.95 mills for the proposed new high school and other support for the Indian Creek Local School District. I am not saying vote for or against this issue. That, of course, is your own decision. But, rather, know what you are voting on. It seems to me that a levy should state that it is a levy, and not fly under the flag of an issue. We are currently paying a total of 24.88 mills of our property taxes to Indian Creek in seven existing levies. This is some 61 percent of the yearly tax bill. With the passage of Issue 6, the new school tax base will be 29.83 mills.

If the new tax equals $12.53 a month on a home valued at $100,000, the total of the levies is about $72.50 a month, or $870 a year.
