WELLSBURG - Brooke County Special Olympics athlete Drake Johnson was recognized by organizers of West Virginia Special Olympics as a nominee for the J. Fred Earley Sportsmanship Award.
Johnson was presented a certificate noting the honor during the state tournament held in Parkersburg.
He has participated in Special Olympics for several years, competing in golf, track and field and basketball.

The son of Tracey and Joe Johnson of Follansbee, he was nominated by his coaches, who noted the strong leadership skills and motivation he has demonstrated in competitions and at practices.
They noted his upbeat and courteous manner and dedication to practice, rarely missing a session and being among the first to attend and last to leave.
Judy Ambrose, who handles publicity for Brooke County Special Olympics, said "He respects his teammates, coaches, opponents and officials and always demonstrates good sportsmanship and behavior.
