STEUBENVILLE - A man awaiting trial on a charge of raping a girl under the age of 13 was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Jefferson County jail cell early this morning, said county Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
Glenn R. Snider, 31, of Lot 15, 401 Labelle St., Brilliant, was found dead inside his cell around 1:30 a.m. today.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation has taken over the investigation. Abdalla said BCI was called in "so there are no questions."
The sheriff said Snider stuffed a sock in his mouth, tied a T-shirt around his neck and to the leg of the bed, tied his feet to the bed bunk, put his arms inside his prisoner's jumpsuit and rolled off the bunk. Abdalla said it appeared Snider had neck and head injuries.
"Who could ever think it could happen like this," Abdalla said.
The county coroner's office was called but it is uncertain at this point if an autopsy will be conducted,
Abdalla said corrections officers checked on Snider around 12:30 a.m. today and discovered the body about an hour later during a check. Corrections officers administered CPR but it was too late, the sheriff said.
Abdalla said two suicide notes were found in the cell.
This is the third suicide in the county jail since it opened in 1998.
Snider's trial was pending before Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge David Henderson. Snider had entered not guilty and not guilty by insanity pleas. A competency evaluation was conducted and it was determined Snider was competent to stand trial. A second evaluation was pending on his competency to waive his Miranda rights.
